Lanjia Saura Paintings from Odisha gets GI Tag

Bhubaneswar: The traditional paintings of Lanjia Saura, known as IDITAL, hailing from the Lanjia Saura or Lanjia Sabara tribe, have achieved the esteemed Geographical Indication (GI) status.

Belonging to the Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs) of Rayagada district, the Lanjia Saura tribe has a distinctive cultural identity, and their artistic expression through IDITAL paintings has now gained national acknowledgment. The original IDITAL art form manifested as exterior murals (wall paintings) on tribal homes, characterized by white patterns on a crimson maroon background.

The Geographical Indication status not only safeguards the authenticity of Lanjia Saura (IDITAL) paintings but also underscores the significance of preserving the cultural diversity represented by the Lanjia Saura tribe. This recognition serves as a mark of origin, ensuring the distinct identity of IDITAL paintings and providing opportunities for increased appreciation and market access.
