New Delhi: In a significant development, Kylian Mbappe is poised to depart Ligue 1 at the conclusion of the season and join Real Madrid. The French forward will make this move after his contract with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) concludes in June.
According to Le Parisien, Mbappe has made the decision to leave Ligue 1 and join Real Madrid, a move that has been long-anticipated by the club. The report suggests that Mbappe’s contract extension with PSG in 2022 was merely a temporary delay before his eventual move to the Spanish giant.
While Mbappe has not formally communicated his decision to PSG or Real Madrid, an announcement is expected next week.
In 2022, Mbappe had been linked with a move to Real Madrid but opted for a contract extension with PSG shortly before the transfer window opened.
Last year, the 25-year-old French captain declared his intention not to renew his contract with PSG, set to expire at the end of the 2023-24 season, allowing him to leave Paris as a free agent. This grants him the liberty to sign a pre-contract agreement with a new club.
In preparation for the potential departure of Mbappe, PSG has reportedly identified AC Milan’s Rafael Leao as his replacement. The club had contingency plans in place for both scenarios — Mbappe staying and Mbappe leaving.
Since joining PSG from Monaco, Mbappe has showcased his prolific goal-scoring ability, accumulating 241 goals in 288 appearances across all competitions.
