Mumbai: The much-anticipated film “Emergency,” written, directed, and produced by Bollywood luminary Kangana Ranaut, has officially set its release date. The movie delves into one of the most contentious periods in post-Independence Indian history, spanning from 1975 to 1977, when then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi declared a nationwide state of emergency. This era witnessed a suspension of civil liberties, restrictions on press freedom, and the cancellation of elections.
Produced by Zee Studios and Ranaut’s Manikarnika Films, the cast boasts notable names, including Anupam Kher, Mahima Chaudhary, Milind Soman, Shreyas Talpade, Vishak Nair, and the late Satish Kaushik. Kangana Ranaut herself takes on the pivotal role of portraying Indira Gandhi.
Marking a global theatrical release, “Emergency” is scheduled to hit screens on June 14, promising audiences an immersive experience into the tumultuous period of Indian history and the charismatic leadership of Indira Gandhi.
In conjunction with “Emergency,” a three-part documentary series titled “Indi(r) a’s Emergency” is in the works from Applause Entertainment and Vikramaditya Motwane’s Andolan Films, exploring the same historical subject. However, the documentary is yet to announce its release date.
