Japan Earthquake: Death Toll Rises to 48 as Rescue Operations Continue

Japan: The aftermath of a powerful earthquake that struck western Japan on New Year’s Day has left at least 48 people dead, according to authorities. The city of Wajima in Ishikawa Prefecture, the coastal epicenter of the quake, reported 19 casualties as emergency teams continue to search through the debris of collapsed and burned structures.

The 7.6 magnitude earthquake triggered tsunami warnings, leading to extensive evacuations and power outages. Although the warnings were lifted, damage assessment is ongoing, with buckled roads, charred houses, and commercial facilities. Officials urge residents to remain vigilant for aftershocks, landslides, or new tsunami warnings.
