Jagdeep Dhankhar Steps Down as Vice President Amid Health Concerns

New Delhi: Citing medical advice and health-related issues, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned from his constitutional post on Monday, marking a rare mid-term exit from one of the highest offices in the country.

Dhankhar submitted his resignation letter to President Droupadi Murmu, with immediate effect. The move is in accordance with Article 67(a) of the Indian Constitution, which allows a Vice President to step down by formally notifying the President.

In his letter, Dhankhar expressed deep appreciation to President Murmu, calling their working relationship “wonderful.” He also extended gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Council of Ministers for their constant support, which he described as “invaluable” throughout his tenure.

Reflecting on his time in office, the outgoing Vice President said he was enriched by his interactions with Members of Parliament and felt honored to serve as Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. He described the role as a “privilege” and emphasized the sense of fulfillment he gained by contributing to India’s democratic journey.

Highlighting his pride in India’s recent advancements, Dhankhar remarked that witnessing the country’s economic growth and global achievements firsthand was a memorable experience. He also shared his optimism about the nation’s future, saying he had “unwavering confidence in Bharat’s brilliant rise.”

Appointed in August 2022, Dhankhar’s tenure was marked by a focus on parliamentary efficiency and democratic values. His unexpected resignation comes at a time when India is preparing for key political and legislative events, making his departure both significant and symbolic.
