INSV Tarini Returns Triumphant After Historic Transoceanic Expedition

New Delhi: The Indian Naval Sailing Vessel (INSV) Tarini made a victorious return to her base port in Goa on April 21, 2024, after completing a groundbreaking transoceanic expedition lasting nearly two months.

Led by women officers Lt Cdr Dilna K and Lt Cdr Roopa A of the Indian Navy, the expedition marked a historic milestone as they became the first from India to achieve such a feat in double-handed mode.

The expedition commenced from Goa on February 28, 2024, with a ceremonial flag-off by renowned circumnavigator and their mentor, Cdr Abhilash Tomy (Retd). After navigating through the unpredictable elements of the Indian Ocean for 22 days, INSV Tarini reached Port Louis, Mauritius, on March 21, 2024.

The officers were warmly received in Mauritius, where they participated in various events and interacted with officials from the Mauritius Coast Guard and the Indian High Commission. Strengthening bilateral ties, the vessel also conducted a training sortie with personnel from the Mauritius Coast Guard, showcasing camaraderie and collaboration between the two maritime nations.

After a brief stay in Port Louis, Lt Cdr Dilna K and Lt Cdr Roopa embarked on their return journey to Goa on March 30, 2024. Despite facing challenges posed by heavy winds, adverse sea states, and rough seas, their unwavering determination guided INSV Tarini safely back home on April 21, 2024.

Their remarkable achievements highlight the Indian Navy’s commitment to promoting gender equality and empowering women in the maritime domain. Through exceptional seamanship and resilience, the officers demonstrated the spirit of adventure and exploration, inspiring future generations, especially women, to participate in challenging maritime activities.

Looking ahead, the officers are gearing up for their next monumental voyage – a circumnavigation of the globe (Sagar Parikrama – IV expedition) on INSV Tarini scheduled to commence in September this year.

INSV Tarini’s triumphant return was celebrated at the boat pool of INS Mandovi, where Commanding Officer INS Mandovi and Naval Station Commander North Goa, along with naval personnel and families of Station Mandovi, welcomed the vessel, symbolizing the collective achievement and camaraderie within the Indian Navy.
