Indigenous Zinc-Ion Battery Technologies to Revolutionize Energy Storage
New Delhi: In a significant stride toward advancing energy storage solutions, the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR), an autonomous institute under the Department of Science and Technology (DST), signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Hindustan Zinc Limited (HZL) on August 21, 2024. The partnership aims to develop new variants of zinc materials to propel the commercialization of zinc-ion batteries, an innovative alternative to costly lithium-ion technologies.
Zinc-ion batteries are gaining attention as a promising solution for large-scale energy storage due to their low cost and the abundance of zinc, an Earth-friendly raw material. With their potential to replace expensive and imported lithium-ion batteries, zinc-based alternatives could play a crucial role in the future of sustainable energy. Recent advancements in material stability and performance across various temperature ranges make zinc-ion batteries a safer and more mature option for grid-scale applications.
However, the commercialization of zinc-ion batteries depends on overcoming certain technical challenges, such as the instability of zinc in water-based solutions. Modifying the electrode, electrolyte, and interfaces is critical to improving the performance and reliability of these batteries. The collaboration between JNCASR and Hindustan Zinc is poised to address these challenges, driving material innovation and accelerating the development of indigenous zinc-ion battery technologies.
Professor Premkumar Senguttuvan’s research group at JNCASR has been at the forefront of zinc-based battery research, utilizing a state-of-the-art battery characterization facility funded by DST. The group’s research has resulted in significant breakthroughs, attracting the interest of industry leaders like Hindustan Zinc. The MoU will leverage JNCASR’s research expertise and Hindustan Zinc’s product innovation capabilities to explore the development of new zinc alloys and electrolytes for rechargeable batteries.
The collaboration aims to modulate the structure and chemical composition of alloys and electrolytes to address existing material issues and improve the life and safety of zinc-ion batteries. Additionally, the JNCASR team plans to demonstrate scalable Zn-ion pouch batteries suitable for large-scale commercial applications.
This partnership aligns with two major Sustainable Development Goals: SDG7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) and SDG13 (Climate Action), marking a pivotal moment in the evolution of battery technologies. Hindustan Zinc’s commitment to innovation in this sector could help drive the global energy transition and place India at the forefront of the battery revolution.
