India’s Robot Astronaut “Vyommitra” Set to Embark on Uncrewed Space Mission Ahead of “Gaganyaan” Manned Mission

New Delhi:  In a significant stride towards India’s ambitious “Gaganyaan” mission, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) Science & Technology; MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances, Pensions, Atomic Energy, and Space, Dr. Jitendra Singh, announced that an uncrewed mission featuring the woman robot astronaut “Vyommitra” is scheduled for the third quarter of this year. The subsequent manned mission “Gaganyaan” is slated for launch in 2025 and will mark India’s first human manned spaceflight.

“Vyommitra,” a name derived from the Sanskrit words “Vyoma” (meaning Space) and “Mitra” (meaning Friend), is equipped with advanced capabilities to monitor module parameters, issue alerts, and execute life support operations. This female robot astronaut is designed to simulate human functions in the space environment and interact with the life support system. It can operate six panels and respond to queries, creating a significant milestone in India’s space exploration endeavors.

Dr. Jitendra Singh emphasized that the uncrewed “Vyommitra” mission is a crucial step in the run-up to the “Gaganyaan” launch. The Gaganyaan project aims to demonstrate India’s human space capabilities by sending a crew of astronauts into an orbit of 400 kilometers and safely bringing them back to Earth, with a landing in India’s sea waters.

Providing an update on Chandrayaan 3, which successfully landed on the South Pole of the Moon on August 23 last year, Dr. Jitendra Singh stated that the mission is progressing according to the expected course of action. The vital inputs from Chandrayaan 3 will be shared in due course, further contributing to India’s advancements in space exploration.

As preparations for the uncrewed “Vyommitra” mission gain momentum, India’s space agency, ISRO, continues to demonstrate its commitment to pushing the boundaries of space technology and exploration on the global stage. The successful execution of these missions will undoubtedly bolster India’s position as a key player in the field of space exploration.
