India’s AI Drive Gains Momentum with Global and Domestic Ambitions

 India is rapidly advancing in the field of artificial intelligence (AI), aiming to strengthen its domestic AI ecosystem while also playing a key role in shaping global AI governance. From developing indigenous large language models (LLMs) to co-chairing international AI summits, India is positioning itself as a major player in the AI revolution.

Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw recently underscored India’s ambition to develop its own GPU technology, a critical component for AI infrastructure. “We are working on three options, where we take a chipset that is available in open-source or licensed form and build upon it to develop India’s own GPU within a timeframe of three to five years,” Vaishnaw said, as quoted by PTI. This initiative aligns with India’s broader push for technological self-sufficiency in an AI landscape currently dominated by the United States and China.

India’s AI push also includes the development of a homegrown generative AI model, announced by Vaishnaw at the Utkarsh Odisha Conclave. He revealed that the project will be powered by the India AI Compute Facility, which has already secured 18,693 GPUs to develop an LLM tailored specifically for India. This initiative is a key component of the ₹10,370 crore IndiaAI Mission, reinforcing the government’s commitment to investing in domestic AI capabilities.

Beyond its national initiatives, India is taking a leadership role in shaping the global AI discourse. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to co-chair the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Action Summit in France, marking a significant step in international AI collaboration.

Highlighting India’s global AI vision, Indian Ambassador to France, Sanjeev Singla, stated, “India will bring to the table the concerns of the Global South, ensuring that AI tools are safe, trustworthy, and secure. There should not be a concentration of these tools in a specific geography or corporate sector, and equitable access to AI technology should be a priority,” he told ANI.

The AI Action Summit, co-chaired by French President Emmanuel Macron and PM Modi, will focus on key themes such as public interest AI, the future of work, AI-driven innovation, trust-building in AI systems, and global AI governance. This summit underscores India’s increasing influence in the global AI landscape, as it pushes for an inclusive, ethical, and democratized AI ecosystem.
