Indian Women’s Hockey Team Secures Semifinal Spot with Dominant Victory Over Italy in FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers 2024

Ranchi: The Indian women’s hockey team emerged victorious against Italy with a scoreline of 5-1 in the third and final Pool B match of the FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers 2024 at the Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Astroturf Hockey Stadium in Ranchi, Jharkhand on Tuesday.

Udita (1’, 55’), Deepika (41’), Salima Tete (45’), and Navneet Kaur (53’) showcased their goal-scoring prowess for the Indian women’s team, while Camila Machin (60′) managed to score a consolation goal for Italy.

With this triumph, India secured the second position in their pool, trailing behind the USA, and earned a spot in the semi-finals of the competition. A top-three finish in the Ranchi meet would grant the Indian women’s team a coveted berth at the Paris 2024 Olympics scheduled for July-August this year.

Despite facing an initial setback with a surprising defeat to the USA, the Indian hockey team demonstrated resilience by defeating New Zealand and Italy (ranked 20th), ensuring a place in the top four.

Entering the clash against Italy with the knowledge that a draw would suffice, India took an early lead with Salima Tete winning a penalty corner in the first minute. Udita, playing her 100th international game for India, capitalized on the opportunity with a powerful drag flick.

As the first quarter ended with a 1-0 lead for India, the hosts pressed high in the second quarter but Italy managed to withstand the pressure. In the third quarter, led by Salima Tete, India increased their lead with goals from Deepika and Salima herself.

The relentless Indian attack continued in the fourth quarter, with Navneet Kaur and Udita adding two more goals. Italy scored a consolation goal in the dying moments through Camila Machin.

India is now set to face Pool A winners and world No. 5 Germany in the FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers 2024 semi-final on Thursday. Even in the case of a loss, India will have another opportunity to secure a place in Paris 2024 through the bronze medal match.
