Medina: A routine journey for Indian Umrah pilgrims turned tragic on Monday after their bus collided with a diesel tanker near Medina, prompting urgent rescue efforts and a swift response from Indian authorities in Saudi Arabia. The severity of the crash, which triggered a powerful explosion, has raised fears of multiple casualties, though officials have not yet confirmed the toll.
The Consulate General of India in Jeddah announced that a 24/7 emergency control room has been established to assist families and provide real-time updates. “In view of a tragic bus accident near Madina, Saudi Arabia, involving Indian Umrah pilgrims, a 24×7 Control Room has been set up,” the mission said in a post on X, along with helpline numbers for immediate support.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar expressed deep concern over the incident. “Deeply shocked at the accident involving Indian nationals in Medinah, Saudi Arabia,” he posted, assuring that the Embassy in Riyadh and the Jeddah Consulate were offering “fullest support” to those affected. He also conveyed condolences to the families of the deceased and wished a swift recovery for the injured.
Early media reports, though unverified, suggest that a majority of the pilgrims on board were from Hyderabad. The bus was travelling from Mecca to Medina, carrying pilgrims who had completed their rituals and were resting at the time of the crash. The collision with the diesel tanker led to a major explosion, significantly intensifying the impact.
Local residents and rescue teams immediately rushed to the scene to help pull survivors from the wreckage. Emergency services continue to transport the severely injured to nearby hospitals. Authorities are yet to release an official count of fatalities and injuries as identification and verification procedures are ongoing.
Back home, Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy expressed sorrow over the tragedy and assured state-level assistance for families awaiting information. The Telangana government has also set up a control room in Hyderabad to help relatives track updates and access support.
With rescue operations still underway and several details awaiting confirmation from Saudi authorities, both Indian missions and state officials have urged families to remain in touch with the designated helplines. Further updates are expected as more information becomes available.
