Indian Railways Signs MoU with DMRC for Automated Wheel Profile Monitoring to Boost Efficiency and Safety

New Delhi: In a landmark move to modernize its rolling stock maintenance and enhance operational safety, Indian Railways today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) for the procurement and installation of Automatic Wheel Profile Measurement Systems (AWPMS). The agreement was formalized at Rail Bhawan, marking a significant stride towards automation in railway maintenance.

AWPMS is a state-of-the-art system that enables automatic, non-contact monitoring of train wheel profiles using laser scanners and high-speed cameras. This advanced technology ensures real-time assessment of wheel geometry and wear patterns, eliminating the need for manual measurement and significantly reducing maintenance time. The system also generates automated alerts when wheel parameters deviate from safety thresholds, facilitating timely corrective actions.

Under the agreement, DMRC will oversee the procurement, supply, installation, and commissioning of four AWPMS units for Indian Railways.

This collaboration underscores Indian Railways’ commitment to integrating cutting-edge technology into its maintenance ecosystem. The use of AWPMS is expected to enhance safety standards, optimize maintenance cycles, and improve service reliability across the rail network. Moreover, the partnership promotes knowledge sharing and skill development, reinforcing synergies between two of India’s leading transportation organizations.
