Indian Railways Launches Major Digital Overhaul to Curb Ticketing Bots and Enhance Passenger Experience

New Delhi: Indian Railways has launched a comprehensive overhaul of its e-ticketing system, dramatically improving security, transparency, and accessibility for genuine passengers. This transformation, implemented through IRCTC, marks a pivotal shift in combating ticketing fraud and ensuring fair access for all users.

At the heart of the upgrade lies the deployment of advanced anti-BOT technologies and integration with a leading Content Delivery Network (CDN) provider. These enhancements have successfully curbed rampant automated bookings by unscrupulous agents—particularly during the high-demand Tatkal booking window, where bots previously accounted for up to 50% of login attempts within the first five minutes.

Thanks to the upgraded platform, bot traffic has been effectively neutralized, ensuring smoother access for legitimate users. As a result, Indian Railways has deactivated over 2.5 crore suspicious user IDs, significantly enhancing the integrity of the ticketing ecosystem. A notable milestone came on May 22, 2025, when the system recorded an all-time high of 31,814 tickets booked per minute, underlining the robustness and scalability of the revamped platform.

To further ensure fairness, new user protocols have been introduced:

  • Aadhaar-verified users can book tickets immediately after registration.

  • Non-Aadhaar verified users must wait three days before accessing Opening ARP, Tatkal, or Premium Tatkal bookings.

These changes have already shown a tangible impact. The average number of daily user logins surged by 19.53%, from 69.08 lakh in FY 2023–24 to 82.57 lakh in FY 2024–25, while average daily ticket bookings rose by 11.85%. Notably, e-ticketing now contributes to 86.38% of all reserved ticket bookings.

Key features of the digital revamp include:

  • 87% of static content now served via CDN, reducing server load and improving load times.

  • Deployment of AI-powered detection systems to identify and block suspicious activity in real-time.

  • Proactive deactivation of suspect IDs and facilitation of complaint redressal through the Cyber Crime Portal.

Reaffirming its commitment to digital excellence, Indian Railways emphasized that innovation and modernization will remain central to delivering a secure, user-centric ticketing experience. The Ministry reiterated its goal to protect passenger interests and ensure equitable access, especially as railway travel continues to serve as a lifeline for millions across the country.
