Indian Navy Thwarts Pirate Hijacking Attempt: MV Lila Norfolk Crew Rescued

New Delhi: In a swift and decisive response to a hijacking incident, the Indian Navy successfully countered pirate aggression onboard the Liberian flagged Bulk Carrier MV Lila Norfolk. The Navy deployed a substantial force of assets, including ships and aircraft, to neutralize the threat.

The INS Chennai guided missile destroyer reached the location by 1515h, marking a critical juncture in the operation. A comprehensive aerial reconnaissance of MV Lila Norfolk ensued, facilitated by the MQ9B (Sea Guardian), P8I, and integral helicopters. Following this, Indian Navy Marine Commandos boarded the vessel to conduct a thorough sanitization of upper decks, machinery compartments, and living spaces. Encouragingly, no pirates were found onboard.

The pirates, likely sensing the forceful response from Indian Naval aircraft and the potential interception by an Indian Navy warship, chose to escape under the cover of night. All 21 crew members of MV Lila Norfolk were successfully rescued and confirmed safe.

Indian Naval forces are now engaged in investigating suspected vessels in the vicinity. Simultaneously, the crew of MV Lila Norfolk is working on restoring propulsion, power supply, and steering gear. Once these essential systems are back in operation, MV Lila Norfolk will resume its journey to the intended destination under the protective escort of an Indian Naval Warship. The Indian Navy’s prompt and effective intervention has not only safeguarded the crew but also averted a potential piracy threat in the maritime domain.
