Indian Navy Revives Maritime Heritage with Global Circumnavigation by Women Officers

New Delhi: The Indian Navy continues to lead in preserving maritime heritage and enhancing seamanship skills through a revitalized sailing tradition. In a significant move, two women officers, Lt Cdr Roopa A and Lt Cdr Dilna K, are set to embark on an extraordinary expedition—Navika Sagar Parikrama II—which will see them circumnavigate the globe aboard INSV Tarini. This mission highlights the Navy’s commitment to promoting gender equality on the high seas while showcasing India’s rising prominence in global maritime affairs.

The duo, who have been rigorously preparing for the expedition over the last three years, will soon set sail on this challenging voyage. Both officers previously participated in trans-oceanic expeditions, including a journey from Goa to Rio de Janeiro via Cape Town and back last year. They also successfully undertook double-handed sailing expeditions from Goa to Sri Vijaya Puram (formerly Port Blair) and from Goa to Port Louis, Mauritius, gaining valuable experience along the way.

Navika Sagar Parikrama II will test the limits of seamanship, demanding exceptional skills, physical endurance, and mental resilience. To prepare, the officers have undergone extensive training under the mentorship of Cdr Abhilash Tomy (Retd.), KC, NM—an accomplished circumnavigator and hero of the Golden Globe Race. Their participation reflects the growing role of women in maritime exploration and the Navy’s efforts to break gender barriers in this traditionally male-dominated field.

As a precursor to this historic journey, the Indian Navy has unveiled the official logo for the expedition. The design features an octagonal shape symbolizing the Indian Navy, while the sun and compass represent celestial navigation. The sailboat, navigating through the vast ocean, signifies the spirit of adventure and resilience embodied by the voyagers. The logo underscores the expedition’s significance in the Navy’s maritime calendar and its dedication to fostering gender equality and excellence.

INSV Tarini’s circumnavigation will further enhance India’s maritime capabilities and underscore its growing leadership in ocean sailing. The expedition will not only highlight India’s rich seafaring tradition but also serve as an inspiration for future generations of sailors.
