Indian Naval Ship Visakhapatnam Swiftly Responds to Drone Attack on MV Genco Picardy in Gulf of Aden

New Delhi: In a display of prompt and decisive action, the Indian Naval Ship (INS) Visakhapatnam, deployed on an anti-piracy mission in the Gulf of Aden, swiftly responded to a distress call from the Marshall Island-flagged MV Genco Picardy after a drone attack at 2311 hrs on January 17, 2024.

Acknowledging the distress call, INS Visakhapatnam intercepted the vessel at 0030 hrs on January 18, 2024, to provide immediate assistance. The MV Genco Picardy, with 22 crew members on board (including 09 Indian nationals), reported no casualties, and the fire was reported to be under control.

Upon reaching the distressed vessel, Indian Naval Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) specialists from INS Visakhapatnam boarded the MV Genco Picardy in the early hours of January 18, 2024, to inspect the damaged area. Following a thorough examination, the EOD specialists successfully rendered the affected area safe for further transit.

The MV Genco Picardy is now proceeding to its next port of call under the escort and protection of INS Visakhapatnam. The timely response of the Indian Navy not only ensured the safety of the crew but also mitigated potential risks arising from the drone attack.

This incident underscores the critical role played by the Indian Navy in maintaining maritime security and responding swiftly to emerging threats. The ongoing anti-piracy patrol in the Gulf of Aden reflects India’s commitment to safeguarding the freedom of navigation and ensuring the security of international maritime trade routes. The collaborative efforts of the INS Visakhapatnam and its crew in this operation showcase the professionalism and readiness of the Indian Navy in addressing maritime challenges.
