Maura: The Indian Coast Guard’s Pollution Control Vessel (PCV) Samudra Paheredar marked a significant milestone in its ongoing overseas deployment to ASEAN countries by making a port call at Muara, Brunei on 09 April 2024. This visit underscores India’s commitment to maritime cooperation and environmental stewardship in the ASEAN region.
The port call of ICGS Samudra Paheredar in Brunei is part of India’s ASEAN Initiative for Marine Pollution, as announced by Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh during the ASEAN Defence Minister Plus Meeting in Cambodia in 2022. The vessel’s deployment to ASEAN countries aims to strengthen bilateral ties and foster collaboration in combating marine pollution, maritime search and rescue, and maritime law enforcement.
During the three-day visit, the crew of ICGS Samudra Paheredar will engage in professional interactions with Brunei Maritime Agencies, focusing on Marine Pollution Response (MPR) and Maritime Search and Rescue (M-SAR). Cross-deck training, Subject Matter Expert Exchanges, and sports events will facilitate knowledge exchange and capacity building between the Indian Coast Guard and their Brunei counterparts.
Highlighting India’s shipbuilding capabilities, the visit also supports the “Aatamnirbhar Bharat” (self-reliant India) and “Make in India” initiatives. The presence of 25 National Cadet Corps (NCC) aboard ICGS Samudra Paheredar underscores India’s commitment to environmental conservation, as they participate in Beach Cleanup activities in collaboration with local youth organizations under the “Puneet Sagar Abhiyan” initiative.
This overseas deployment serves as a testament to the Indian Coast Guard’s dedication to bolstering bilateral relationships and enhancing international cooperation with Foreign Friendly Countries (FFCs). Prior to Muara, ICGS Samudra Paheredar visited Vietnam and the Philippines, demonstrating India’s commitment to seamless diplomatic maritime engagements in the ASEAN region.
