India Triumphs Over Argentina in Thrilling 5-4 Victory in FIH Hockey Pro League

Antwerp: In a display of unwavering determination, the Indian men’s hockey team secured a thrilling 5-4 victory against Argentina in their fourth match of the European leg of the FIH Hockey Pro League 2023/24. Key players for India included Araijeet Singh Hundal (7’), Gurjant Singh (18’), and Captain Harmanpreet Singh, who delivered a hat-trick (29’, 50’, 52’). Argentina’s goals came from Federico Monja (3’), Nicolas Keenan (24’), Tadeo Marucci (54’), and Lucas Martinez (57’).

India started strong, maintaining possession and making accurate passes to penetrate Argentina’s defense. Despite this, it was Argentina who struck first, with Federico Monja scoring in the 3rd minute. India quickly equalized with a brilliant field goal from Araijeet Singh Hundal in the 7th minute. The quarter ended 1-1 after India missed a penalty corner opportunity.

India’s aggressive counter-attacking strategy paid off when Gurjant Singh scored an excellent field goal in the 18th minute, giving India a 2-1 lead. Argentina responded quickly, with Nicolas Keenan leveling the score at 2-2 in the 24th minute. Just before half-time, Captain Harmanpreet Singh converted a penalty corner, putting India ahead 3-2.

Both teams intensified their attacks, resulting in a highly entertaining third quarter. Despite earning a penalty corner, India could not extend their lead as Argentina’s goalkeeper made a crucial save. The quarter ended goalless, maintaining the score at 3-2 in India’s favor.

India came out in full force, pushing Argentina into errors. A penalty stroke awarded to India was successfully converted by Harmanpreet Singh in the 50th minute, extending the lead to 4-2. Two minutes later, another penalty stroke was awarded and converted by Harmanpreet Singh, making it 5-2. Argentina fought back with goals from Tadeo Marucci (54’) and Lucas Martinez (57’), narrowing the gap to 5-4. Despite the late surge from Argentina, India held on to secure a 5-4 victory.

The Indian Men’s Hockey Team is set to face Germany next at 1430hrs IST on 1st June. Fans can catch all matches of the FIH Hockey Pro League 2023/24 on JioCinema, with all India matches also being telecast on Sports18 – Khel.
