India to Host 2nd International Conference on Green Hydrogen: Aiming for Global Leadership in Clean Energy

New Delhi: The Government of India is set to host the 2nd International Conference on Green Hydrogen (ICGH 2024) from September 11-13 in New Delhi. The conference aims to advance India’s position as a global leader in Green Hydrogen technology and its applications.

The curtain-raiser ceremony for the conference was held today, with Pralhad Joshi, Union Minister of New & Renewable Energy, highlighting the event’s pivotal role in India’s Green Hydrogen ecosystem. “This year’s conference is a milestone in our journey towards making India a global hub for Green Hydrogen production and its derivatives,” said Joshi. The event will bring together global thought leaders, policymakers, industry experts, and innovators to explore advancements in Green Hydrogen technology.

Joshi emphasized that the conference reflects Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a capable and developed Northeast and a commitment to clean energy. “Under PM Modi’s leadership, we aim to position India at the forefront of Green Hydrogen. This conference will showcase innovative products, technologies, and services and will discuss green financing, upskilling, and start-up initiatives,” he added. With over 2,000 registrations already secured and expectations of more than 6,000 participants, including 120+ exhibitors, the event promises to be a significant platform for showcasing India’s Green Hydrogen capabilities.

The 2023 edition of ICGH was successful in establishing a Green Hydrogen ecosystem and fostering a systematic approach to decarbonization. Since then, India has made substantial progress, including awarding 3,000 MW capacity for electrolyser manufacturing and issuing tenders for substantial Green Hydrogen and Green Ammonia production capacities. The government has also launched a ₹400 crore R&D scheme to support Green Hydrogen research.

The timing of ICGH 2024 is crucial as nations globally intensify efforts to combat climate change and reduce fossil fuel dependence. The conference will feature various innovative components, including the GH2thon Hackathon, aimed at developing solutions for the Green Hydrogen ecosystem. With prize money totaling ₹2.25 lakhs, the hackathon encourages participants to find indigenous solutions to enhance energy efficiency and optimize supply chains.

Other notable events include a Scientific Poster Competition with prizes for outstanding research and a Green Hydrogen Quiz Finale. A special session, “Green Hydrogen for Youth,” will engage young people in discussions about the future of Green Hydrogen and its role in addressing climate change.

The conference will also include a CEOs’ Roundtable on September 11, bringing together industry leaders and investors to discuss challenges and opportunities in the Green Hydrogen sector. Bhupinder S. Bhalla, Secretary, Ministry of New & Renewable Energy, highlighted the focus on international collaboration, practical applications, and scaling up Green Hydrogen production. “ICGH 2024 is designed to accelerate India’s Green Hydrogen journey, fostering global cooperation and innovation in clean energy,” he said.

ICGH-2024, organized by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy and the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, in association with various government departments and industry partners, aims to position India as a global hub for Green Hydrogen production, utilization, and export. The conference will draw over 6,000 attendees from diverse sectors, reflecting India’s commitment to addressing climate change and advancing energy security.
