India Secures 3-1 Victory Over Ireland in FIH Hockey Pro League Comeback

Bhubaneswar: The Indian men’s hockey team staged an impressive comeback to defeat Ireland 3-1 in their FIH Hockey Pro League 2024-25 match at the Kalinga Hockey Stadium in Bhubaneswar. After conceding an early goal to Jeremy Duncan (8’), India bounced back through strikes from Mandeep Singh (22’), Jarmanpreet Singh (45’), and Sukhjeet Singh (58’), securing their third win of the tournament.

The match began with Ireland dominating the first quarter, pressing aggressively and creating multiple circle entries. Their early intent paid off when Duncan capitalized on a well-placed assist from Nelson, cutting through the right flank and firing the ball past Indian goalkeeper Krishan Pathak. The visitors continued to push forward, even earning a penalty corner, but failed to extend their lead.

India, sluggish in the opening minutes, found their rhythm in the second quarter. Sukhjeet Singh nearly equalized with a shot inside the circle but lost possession at the crucial moment. However, India’s persistence paid off in the 22nd minute when Mandeep Singh produced a moment of brilliance. Receiving a pass from Abhishek, he surged into the right flank and launched a powerful strike that found the back of the net, bringing the hosts level.

With the momentum shifting in their favor, India intensified their attacks in the third quarter, putting Ireland’s defense under constant pressure. The breakthrough came in the 45th minute when India earned a penalty corner. Captain Harmanpreet Singh’s drag flick was blocked by the Irish goalkeeper, but Jarmanpreet Singh, who had injected the ball, quickly reacted to the rebound and slotted it home, giving India a crucial 2-1 lead.

The atmosphere inside the Kalinga Stadium electrified as fans celebrated India’s comeback. The final quarter saw both teams creating goal-scoring opportunities, but India remained in control. Ireland’s frustration grew as they lost a man to a yellow card, with Luke Witherow being sent off in the dying minutes.

With just over a minute remaining, India sealed the win in style. Instead of opting for a direct drag flick from a penalty corner, Harmanpreet cleverly passed the ball to Rajinder, whose shot was perfectly positioned for Sukhjeet Singh to apply the final touch, securing India’s 3-1 victory.
