India Records 6.60% Growth in Power Generation; 10.06% Surge in Coal-Based Power

New Delhi: India has witnessed a robust 6.60% growth in power generation from April to January 2024 compared to the corresponding period in the previous year. Notably, the coal-based power generation exhibited a commendable surge of 10.06% during this timeframe.

Despite the escalating power demand, there has been a significant reduction of 36.69% in coal imports for blending, decreasing from 30.58 MT to 19.36 MT during Apr ’23 to Jan ’24. This substantial decrease underscores India’s steadfast commitment to achieving self-reliance in coal production and reducing overall coal imports.

India’s power generation landscape is characterized by a mix of conventional (Thermal, Nuclear, and Hydro) and renewable sources (Wind, Solar, Biomass, etc.). However, coal continues to play a dominant role, contributing over 70% to the total power generation.

Coal-based power generation in India has been instrumental in meeting the escalating energy demands driven by industrial expansion, technological advancements, and economic development. The government is actively pursuing strategies to boost coal production further, aiming to enhance availability and reduce dependence on imported coal.

The concerted efforts align with the government’s vision to safeguard foreign reserves and fortify the nation’s energy security. As India continues on its trajectory of economic growth, the power sector’s resilience and adaptability remain pivotal in sustaining the momentum and meeting the evolving energy needs of the nation.
