India Launches Pioneering Graphene Centre to Spearhead Technological Innovation

New Delhi: The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has unveiled the India Graphene Engineering and Innovation Centre (IGEIC), marking a significant milestone under the vision of Viksit Bharat@2047. IGEIC, a not-for-profit, section 8 company, aims to establish a premier hub for graphene technology commercialization, focusing on diverse applications including electronics, energy storage, healthcare, and sustainable material development.

S. Krishnan, Secretary of MeitY, officially inaugurated the Centre, joined by distinguished guests such as Sunita Verma, Group Coordinator of MeitY; Madhavan Nambiar, Chairman of IGEIC; Asad Pathan, former Chairman of IOCL; and other key figures. The Centre’s strategic setup includes an R&D facility in Trivandrum, Kerala, a Corporate & Business Development hub in Bangalore, Karnataka, and a manufacturing unit in Palakkad, Kerala, supported by the Government of Kerala.

In his address, S. Krishnan emphasized IGEIC’s role in positioning India as a global leader in graphene technology. “The establishment of IGEIC under the Graphene Aurora program underscores our commitment to innovation and industrial advancement. This Centre is poised to drive significant opportunities for startups, industry, and economic growth,” said Krishnan.

IGEIC will foster a robust ecosystem involving startups, SMEs, academia, and government bodies, aiming to propel India into the forefront of global graphene technology development. This initiative is expected to create substantial economic opportunities and advance India’s position in the global technological landscape.
