India-Japan Steel Dialogue Strengthens Bilateral Cooperation in Steel Industry

New Delhi: The 3rd India-Japan Steel Dialogue was successfully held at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi, bringing together industry leaders and policymakers to discuss advancements and cooperation in the steel sector. The dialogue was jointly organized by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), Japan, and the Ministry of Steel, India. It was co-chaired by Vinod Kumar Tripathi, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Steel, Government of India, and Hideyuki Urata, Deputy Director General, METI, Japan, who led the respective delegations.

The discussions covered economic developments in both countries, trends in the steel industry, bilateral steel trade, and global market dynamics. The Indian delegation highlighted key government initiatives, including efforts to improve ease of doing business, infrastructure-driven growth in steel demand, and sustainability measures such as the release of the Green Steel Report and the Taxonomy of Green Steel. India also emphasized its focus on research and development, presenting significant investment opportunities for Japanese companies in the sector.

One of the key areas of discussion was the European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (EU CBAM), which has global implications for steel trade. Both sides shared their perspectives on its potential impact and ways to navigate emerging trade challenges.

The Japanese delegation provided insights into advancements in Japan’s steel industry and updates on ongoing capacity-building programs. They also reiterated Japan’s commitment to supporting investments in new steel technologies in India and strengthening technological collaboration.

A key highlight of the meeting was the review of progress in skill development and technology exchange. Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing cooperation, streamlining business processes, and fostering innovation in the steel industry. India assured continued support for Japanese companies operating in the Indian market, reinforcing its commitment to ease of doing business under the framework of the dialogue.

The India-Japan Steel Dialogue serves as a critical platform to boost bilateral cooperation in steel production, product diversification, and workplace safety. This partnership is governed by the Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) on the steel sector, signed on December 22, 2020. The ongoing dialogue reflects the shared vision of India and Japan in fostering sustainable growth, technological innovation, and resilience in the global steel industry.
