India Clinches Top Spot with 3-0 Victory Over Japan in Women’s Asian Champions Trophy

Rajgir: The Indian Women’s Hockey Team continued its unbeaten streak at the Bihar Women’s Asian Champions Trophy Rajgir 2024, defeating Japan 3-0 in their final group-stage match at the Rajgir Hockey Stadium. The second-half brilliance from Navneet Kaur (37’) and Deepika (47’, 48’) sealed the win, ensuring India finished at the top of the table with maximum points. The team will face Japan again in the semifinals on November 19, as Japan secured the fourth spot in the standings.

The first half showcased a resilient Japanese defense, holding India to a goalless draw despite several circle entries and penalty corners. Japan’s goalkeeper, Yu Kudo, was instrumental in denying India’s penalty corner attempts, including a powerful flick by Deepika in the first quarter. As the second quarter unfolded, Japan gained confidence, pressing India’s defense but failing to convert opportunities. Both sides traded circle entries, with neither able to find the back of the net, leaving the scoreline at 0-0 by halftime.

The second half saw India adopt a more aggressive approach. Navneet Kaur broke the deadlock in the 37th minute, executing a precise reverse shot from the top of the circle that caught the Japanese defense off guard. With momentum on their side, India ramped up the pressure.

Deepika dominated the final quarter, converting a penalty corner in the 47th minute with a low flick to double the lead. Just a minute later, she delivered another stunning strike, this time powering the ball past the Japanese keeper, making it 3-0. India maintained their control for the remainder of the match, ensuring a comprehensive victory.

India’s commanding performance throughout the group stage highlights their strength and determination as they prepare for the semifinals. Japan, despite their spirited defense, will need to regroup quickly to challenge India again on November 19.

With a stellar group-stage performance and an unyielding defense, the Indian team is poised to make a strong push for the championship title, keeping fans across the country hopeful for another major triumph.
