India Clinches ICC Champions Trophy in a Thrilling Finale Against New Zealand

Dubai: In a nerve-wracking final at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, India edged past New Zealand by four wickets to lift the ICC Champions Trophy on Sunday night. The victory sealed India’s third Champions Trophy title, following their triumphs in 2002 and 2013, and capped off an unbeaten campaign in the tournament.

The defining moment came after the winning runs when Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli celebrated with an impromptu dandiya with the stumps, capturing the joy of yet another ICC triumph. It was a historic fourth Champions Trophy title for both stalwarts, further cementing their legacy in Indian cricket.

Chasing a target of 252, India got off to a blazing start, thanks to Rohit Sharma (76 off 83) and Shubman Gill (31), who put up a 105-run opening stand—the first century partnership of the tournament. The Indian skipper dominated the powerplay, smashing boundaries at will and unsettling the Kiwi bowlers.

However, two quick wickets—Gill (31) and Virat Kohli (1)—brought New Zealand back into the contest, slowing down India’s momentum. Rohit, after a masterclass in stroke play, fell stumped to Rachin Ravindra, attempting an aggressive charge.

With pressure mounting, Shreyas Iyer (48) and Axar Patel (29) steadied the innings with a 61-run stand, only for both to fall in quick succession, leaving the match on a knife’s edge.

As tension gripped the Indian camp, KL Rahul (33 not out) and Hardik Pandya (18) played mature knocks to guide India home with one over to spare, ensuring a dramatic finish to an already intense final.

Earlier in the day, New Zealand posted 251/7 after being put into bat. Daryl Mitchell (63) and Michael Bracewell (53 not out) were the key contributors, while Rachin Ravindra (37) chipped in with a handy knock. India’s spinners, Kuldeep Yadav (2/40), Varun Chakravarthy (2/45), and Ravindra Jadeja (1/30), bowled with precision, ensuring the Black Caps were unable to break free in the middle overs.

With this victory, India remained unbeaten throughout the tournament, reinforcing their dominance on the global stage. Rohit Sharma was named Player of the Final for his scintillating knock, setting the stage for yet another ICC triumph.
