India and WIPO Forge Innovative Partnership to Advance Global Innovation and IPR Awareness

New Delhi: Union Minister for Education Dharmendra Pradhan presided over the signing of a significant ‘Letter of Intent’ today between the Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), a United Nations agency dedicated to supporting the world’s innovators and creators.

The event, held in New Delhi, was attended by a distinguished group of officials, including Sherif Sadallah, Executive Director of WIPO Academy; Suman Bery, Vice Chairman of NITI Aayog; Dr. V.K. Saraswat, Member of Science & Technology at NITI Aayog; Altaye Tedla, Head of WIPO Academy; and Dr. Chintan Vaishnav, Mission Director of AIM.

Speaking at the event, Pradhan emphasized that an innovation-based knowledge economy is crucial for India’s vision of Viksit Bharat 2047. He highlighted that the new partnership aims to drive innovation, entrepreneurship, and intellectual property (IP) programs to benefit all, particularly nations in the Global South. Pradhan also noted that this collaboration will promote India’s innovation models internationally, enhance IP understanding from a school level, and foster inclusive and sustainable economic growth.

He noted that India’s progress in the Global Innovation Index is a testament to the country’s commitment to nurturing creativity and entrepreneurship.

Scope and Objectives of the Indo-WIPO Joint Program

The Indo-WIPO Joint Program aims to achieve several key objectives:

  • Global Expansion of AIM Programs: Implementing key AIM initiatives, such as the Atal Tinkering Labs (ATL) and Atal Incubation Centers (AIC), in countries of the Global South and those in transition, tailored to specific national needs.
  • Enhancing IPR Understanding: Improving awareness and knowledge of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) among students, teachers, innovators, and entrepreneurs in India.
  • Promoting IPR for Economic Growth: Increasing understanding of the importance of IPR for development and economic growth, considering the educational and training needs of the target groups.
  • Building a Network of Trainers: Establishing a network of trainers in innovation, creativity, and IP.
  • Familiarizing Beneficiaries with Innovation Theories: Educating beneficiaries and learners about theories of innovation and creativity.

The collaborative effort between WIPO and AIM-NITI Aayog will involve structuring programs to export India’s successful innovation models to other countries. Both organizations will work together on designing and implementing various IP training and capacity-building programs, taking into account the specific needs of the target ecosystems and conducting preliminary needs assessments.
