India and Oman Strengthen Maritime Cooperation to Combat Illegal Activities at Sea

New Delhi: In a significant stride towards enhancing maritime security and cooperation, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) and the Royal Oman Police Coast Guard (ROPCG) convened the 5th Annual High-Level Meeting in New Delhi. The meeting, held on April 23, 2024, underscored the commitment of both nations to combat transnational illegal activities at sea and promote regional collaboration in maritime safety and security efforts.

The high-level discussions were led by Director General Rakesh Pal from the Indian Coast Guard and Assistant Officer Commanding Colonel Abdul Aziz Mohammed Ali Al Jabri from the Royal Oman Police Coast Guard. The meeting provided a platform for both delegations to deliberate on various aspects of maritime cooperation and exchange insights on addressing maritime challenges effectively.

The meeting emphasized the importance of bolstering bilateral engagements through comprehensive capacity-building programs, facilitating cross-ship visits, and implementing initiatives like the Sea Rider program. Additionally, discussions centered on establishing professional linkages between pollution reporting centers to enhance coordination in responding to maritime incidents promptly.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to deepening mutual cooperation and collaboration in maritime security initiatives. By strengthening their partnership, India and Oman aim to fortify the maritime safety and security framework in the region, contributing to the maintenance of peace and stability in the maritime domain.

As part of further engagements, an ROPCG delegation is scheduled to meet with representatives from the Society of Indian Defence Manufacturers in New Delhi on April 25, 2024. The meeting aims to familiarize the ROPCG delegation with India’s shipbuilding capabilities under the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ (Self-Reliant India) initiative, fostering greater collaboration in the maritime defense sector
