India and New Zealand Initiate Free Trade Agreement Negotiations to Strengthen Economic Ties

New Delhi: In a major step toward deepening economic cooperation, India and New Zealand have officially launched negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA). The announcement comes on the eve of a bilateral meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his New Zealand counterpart, Christopher Luxon, marking a new chapter in the longstanding partnership between the two nations.

The decision to begin FTA discussions was formalized in a meeting between India’s Minister for Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, and New Zealand’s Minister for Trade and Investment, Todd McClay, in New Delhi. The agreement is expected to enhance trade and investment flows, improve market access, and strengthen supply chain integration between the two economies.

India and New Zealand have enjoyed strong diplomatic and economic relations, underpinned by shared democratic values and robust people-to-people ties. With economic complementarities in sectors such as agriculture, technology, education, and renewable energy, both nations see significant potential for growth in bilateral trade.

The FTA negotiations reflect a mutual commitment to fostering resilience and prosperity in both economies. As discussions progress, both sides aim to achieve balanced outcomes that benefit businesses, consumers, and industries in India and New Zealand alike.
