India and Mongolia Strengthen Defence Ties at 12th Joint Working Group Meeting

Ulaanbaatar: The 12th Joint Working Group (JWG) meeting between the Defence Ministries of India and Mongolia concluded today in Ulaanbaatar, marking another significant step in the ongoing defence cooperation between the two nations. The two-day meeting, held from May 16-17, 2024, was co-chaired by Amitabh Prasad, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Defence, India, and Brigadier General Gankhuyag Davagdorj, State Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, Mongolia. India’s Ambassador to Mongolia, Atul Malhari Gotsurve, was also in attendance.

During the JWG, both sides expressed satisfaction with the progress of existing defence cooperation initiatives and discussed ways to further enhance these ties. The meeting provided an opportunity to review various bilateral defence cooperation initiatives and to outline future steps to strengthen collaboration. Additionally, both parties exchanged views on the current geopolitical situation, emphasizing the importance of continued cooperation in maintaining regional stability.

Joint Secretary Amitabh Prasad highlighted the capabilities of the Indian defence industry and expressed optimism about a fruitful partnership with the Mongolian Armed Forces. Brigadier General Gankhuyag Davagdorj echoed this sentiment, acknowledging the potential for increased collaboration and the growing ties between the two countries.

As part of the visit, the Indian delegation, including the Joint Secretary and Ambassador Gotsurve, called on Deputy Defence Minister of Mongolia, B. Bayarmagnai, to discuss further bilateral cooperation. The delegation also visited a training establishment in Ulaanbaatar, where they reviewed ongoing engagements and explored opportunities for future collaboration.

India and Mongolia share a deep historical, cultural, and civilisational bond, often referring to each other as ‘Spiritual Neighbours’. In contemporary times, shared values of democracy, freedom, and market economy have brought the two nations even closer.
