Mbabane: India and Eswatini further solidified their diplomatic relations with the successful conclusion of the second Foreign Office Consultations (FOC) held in Mbabane on February 19, 2024. The Indian delegation, led by Shri Puneet R. Kundal, Additional Secretary (East & Southern Africa) from the Ministry of External Affairs of the Republic of India, engaged in comprehensive discussions with the Eswatini delegation, headed by Mr. Sizwe Newman Ntshangase, Principal Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs & International Cooperation of the Kingdom of Eswatini.
The FOC provided an opportunity for both delegations to review and enhance the entire spectrum of bilateral relations. The discussions encompassed political exchanges, development partnership projects, defence cooperation, trade and economic matters, consular issues, and collaborative efforts in sectors such as agriculture, education, health, digital technology, renewable energy, art, and culture. Both sides expressed contentment with the existing bilateral ties and emphasized the need for further strengthening and diversification.
In 2019, India opened its High Commission in Eswatini, signaling a deepening commitment to bilateral cooperation. Both parties acknowledged this positive momentum and expressed anticipation for the opening of the High Commission of Eswatini in India, contributing to the continued growth of their relations.
Multilateral issues also featured prominently in the discussions, including UN Security Council reforms, Peace and Security in Eastern & Southern Africa, Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), Southern African Development Community (SADC), and Southern African Customs Union (SACU). The mutual satisfaction was noted over the inclusion of the African Union as a permanent member during India’s G-20 Presidency.
The commitment to regular high-level political exchanges and joint institutional mechanisms was reiterated, underlining the shared goal of maintaining a vibrant and mutually beneficial partnership. The talks unfolded in a friendly and cordial atmosphere, reflecting the positive and cooperative spirit between India and Eswatini.
Both sides agreed to convene the next round of consultations in New Delhi in 2025, demonstrating their commitment to sustained engagement and the deepening of bilateral ties. The successful FOC serves as a testament to the enduring friendship and cooperation between India and Eswatini, fostering shared prosperity and development.
