India Adds 57th Tiger Reserve: Ratapani Tiger Reserve Notified in Madhya Pradesh

Bhopal: Ratapani Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh has been officially notified as India’s 57th tiger reserve, marking another milestone in the nation’s wildlife conservation efforts. The announcement was made by Union Minister for Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, Bhupender Yadav, who shared the development on the social media platform X.

“Caring for conservation! We continue to make great strides in conserving our tigers. India has added its 57th tiger reserve to the tally. The latest to join the list is Ratapani Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh. As a country of nature lovers and worshippers, India offers the best habitat for the big cat. The feat is a result of the emphasis laid by PM Shri Narendra Modi ji on wildlife protection alongside economic progress,” Yadav posted.

About Ratapani Tiger Reserve

Located in the Ratapani-Bhopal-Sehore forest landscape, the tiger reserve spans a total area of 1,271.4 sq km, comprising a core area of 763.8 sq km and a buffer zone of 507.6 sq km. It becomes Madhya Pradesh’s eighth tiger reserve, reinforcing the state’s reputation as a leader in tiger conservation.

Boost to Conservation and Local Communities

The establishment of Ratapani Tiger Reserve is expected to bolster wildlife management in the region through measures like:

  • Enhanced Protection: Implementation of standard protection protocols for tigers and other wildlife.
  • Habitat Management: Focused efforts to maintain and improve the habitat’s ecological balance.
  • Ecotourism Promotion: Development of sustainable tourism initiatives that benefit local communities.
  • Community Engagement: Programs to involve and support local communities in conservation efforts.

These initiatives aim not only to protect the big cats but also to promote socio-economic development in the area, providing the local population with opportunities to participate in and benefit from ecotourism activities.

India’s tiger conservation success story is globally recognized, with the country housing nearly 70% of the world’s tiger population. The addition of Ratapani Tiger Reserve reflects the government’s unwavering commitment to wildlife protection, as emphasized by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of balancing ecological preservation with economic progress.
