Bhubaneswar: As Odisha grapples with scorching temperatures, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has delivered an unwelcome forecast, predicting no respite from the sweltering heat in the coming days. The IMD has warned of heatwave to severe heatwave conditions persisting in various parts of the state for the next five days.
Issuing a red alert for several districts on April 26-27, the IMD cautioned that the mercury is expected to surge by 2-4°C across many regions in Odisha over the next 3 to 4 days. Coastal districts, in particular, are likely to experience day temperatures of 40°C or above, attributed to prevailing northwesterly to westerly dry air and intense solar insolation.
The forecast indicates that the twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack could witness temperatures touching 45°C on April 29-30 and May 1, with Jharsuguda and Balangir projected to be the hottest spots at a scorching 46°C.
Despite the IMD’s predictions, some areas have already experienced soaring temperatures, surpassing the 40°C mark. As of midday, Bhubaneswar recorded a high of 42.2°C, second only to Jharsuguda at 43.6°C. Other regions where the mercury surged past 40°C include Hirakud (42.2°C), Sambalpur (42.2°C), Keonjhar (41.8°C), Chandbali (41.8°C), Rourkela (41.4°C), and Balasore (41°C).
Health advisories have been issued urging people to stay hydrated, avoid outdoor activities during peak hours, and take necessary measures to prevent heat-related illnesses.
