IFFI 2024 Explores the Future of Cinema with Barco’s Laser HDR Technology

Goa: The fifth day of the 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa offered delegates an immersive dive into cutting-edge advancements in cinema technology. Held at the Kala Academy, the day began with a masterclass titled “Laser for Post-Production and Evolution to HDR”, led by Anthon Muller, Global Strategic Director of Barco Cinema.

Anthon Muller captivated the audience with an engaging audio-visual presentation, followed by an insightful session simplifying the complexities of HDR (High Dynamic Range) technology. Highlighting the transformative potential of Barco’s patented Laser HDR technology, Muller painted a vivid picture of its impact on cinema projection and post-production.

In the current digital era, consumers are familiar with HDR displays on devices like iPhones and QLED TVs. However, applying HDR and laser technology to cinema projection represents a revolutionary leap. According to Muller, 99% of post-production houses worldwide still rely on lamp-based setups, a scenario Barco aims to change with its three-pronged strategy:

  1. Educating moviegoers.
  2. Enticing post-production houses.
  3. Encouraging exhibition halls.

Throughout the masterclass, Muller detailed the benefits of HDR over the traditional SDR (Standard Dynamic Range), supported by illustrations and statistics. Laser HDR promises superior contrast, better color grading, and exceptional uniformity, offering filmmakers and audiences an unprecedented visual experience.

Muller also emphasized its cost-effectiveness, presenting it as an accessible solution for the global film industry. “Since working with Barco HDR, my taste has been spoiled,” he quipped, revealing plans to upgrade his home screening system to laser-based HDR.

Barco’s Laser HDR technology is making its mark, having debuted in the US and London. The company has already secured six titles for production and projection using the new setup. While addressing concerns about its impact on classic black-and-white films, Muller assured cinephiles that HDR’s enhanced contrasts would make viewing monochrome masterpieces even more immersive.

Muller’s promise of “superior contrast and exceptional uniformity” left cinephiles envisioning a bright future for filmmaking. By bridging technological innovation with cinematic artistry, Barco’s Laser HDR technology is set to redefine the standards of cinematic storytelling and audience experience.

The masterclass, one of IFFI’s highlights, showcased not only the potential of new technology but also its role in enriching the timeless magic of cinema.
