IEC/ISO Workshop on Digital Transformation Concludes at Yashobhoomi Convention Centre

Dwarka: The Bureau of Indian Standards, in collaboration with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), successfully concluded a two-day workshop on Digital Transformation at Yashobhoomi Convention Centre, Dwarka. The event aimed to demystify SMART standards and enhance understanding of digital transformation in the standardization process.

Shri Pramod Kumar Tiwari, Director General of BIS, highlighted BIS’s active involvement with ISO and IEC since its inception in 1947. He emphasized the significant role of digital transformation in standards, particularly benefiting small industries and MSMEs.

The workshop focused on the Standards Machine Applicable Readable and Transferable (SMART) program, a joint initiative of ISO and IEC, aimed at driving the digital evolution of international standards. Technical sessions covered various themes to address the complexities of SMART standards and digital transformation in standardization.

The workshop clarified the concept of SMART standards for a diverse audience, including National Standards Bodies (NSBs), industry bodies, manufacturers, service providers, and stakeholders. Participants gained insights into the current status of SMART standards, addressing technological challenges and advancements in the landscape. The role of digital transformation in standard formulation and technical regulations was highlighted, sensitizing industries to the evolving standards landscape. The workshop emphasized the potential for National Standards Bodies (NSBs) to derive substantial value from digital transformation principles and SMART standards, enhancing their efficacy and relevance.

Active participation was observed from ISO Central Secretariat, IEC Secretariat, and representatives from ISO member countries, including Japan, South Africa, Germany, and the UK. Deliberations covered topics such as data management, end-user value, SMART pilots, and experiences in digital transformation.

Shri Chandan Bahl, Deputy Director General, welcomed participants, emphasizing the transformative impact of digitalization worldwide. Shri Rajeev Sharma, DDG (Standardization – II), outlined the program objectives, highlighting the role of digital transformation in driving Industry 4.0 across sectors like power, infrastructure, and transportation.

Deputy Secretary General of IEC, Mr. Gilles Thonet, and Head of PMO at ISO, Ms. Mara Rolando, discussed IEC and ISO strategies and digital transformation in their theme address. Shri Vimal Mahendroo, IEC Vice President and SMB Chair, delivered the keynote address on Digital Standards & Conformity Assessment, envisioning the landscape beyond 2030. The workshop provided a platform for valuable insights, collaboration, and learning from India’s digital transformation journey.
