H&UD Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra Pays Surprise Visit to Aahar Kendra, Emphasizes Quality and Cleanliness

Bhubaneswar: Housing and Urban Development (H&UD) Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra made an unannounced visit to the Aahar Kendra at Capital Hospital premises today, reinforcing the government’s commitment to ensuring quality and cleanliness in the state-run affordable meal centers.

During his visit, Minister Mahapatra purchased a meal coupon and dined alongside the patrons, engaging in conversations with them to gather firsthand feedback on the food quality and their overall experience at the Aahar Kendra.

Emphasizing the importance of maintaining high standards of cleanliness and food quality, Mahapatra ordered the immediate repair of a broken dishwashing machine. Addressing the media afterward, he affirmed the continuation of the Aahar Yojana, stating it is crucial for public welfare. He also mentioned the possibility of a future review of the scheme’s name.

Highlighting the state government’s dedication to providing nutritious food in a hygienic environment, Mahapatra stressed the need to serve the underprivileged with dignity. He suggested involving self-supporting women in the service to further enhance quality, given the rising costs. The Minister pointed out that the government heavily subsidizes these meals, with the state covering ₹23 of the cost while diners pay only ₹5.

Launched on Utkal Dibasa in April 2015, the Aahar Yojana currently operates 168 centers across 115 urban areas in the state. All centers and kitchens are ISO-certified and GEO-linked, with 61 centers offering night meals, collectively serving one lakh meals daily.

Mahapatra also instructed officials to ensure the upkeep of cleanliness and the proper placement of dust bins at the center, reinforcing the government’s commitment to the well-being of its citizens.
