Green Sustainability: Dr. Jitendra Singh Emphasizes Urgent Action at Green Sarathi Summit

New Delhi: Sustainability is no longer a distant ideal but a pressing necessity, said Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences, as he addressed the Green Sarathi Summit organized by the Indian Express Group. Stressing the critical need for actionable commitments, Dr. Singh highlighted that global challenges such as climate change and environmental degradation demand collective responsibility from governments, industries, and individuals.

Dr. Singh underscored the transformative power of public involvement in shaping policy and driving systemic change. Citing the collective response during the COVID-19 pandemic, he emphasized that public ownership of sustainability efforts can lead to inclusive and effective policies. He called for a united effort involving government, civil society, academia, and industry to foster innovative and community-supported solutions.

As a medical doctor, Dr. Singh brought a unique perspective by connecting environmental degradation to rising health issues such as diabetes. He highlighted how pollution, biodiversity loss, and endocrine-disrupting chemicals adversely impact human health, particularly insulin production and action. “Preserving biodiversity and reducing pollution are not just environmental imperatives but public health necessities,” he said.

Dr. Singh detailed several government initiatives aimed at combating climate change and promoting sustainable practices:

  • Mission LiFE: Encourages environmentally conscious lifestyles at an individual level.
  • Green Credits Program: Rewards eco-friendly actions that contribute to sustainability.
  • National Missions on Climate Change: Focuses on resilience and adaptation strategies.
  • Climate Stack: A digital public infrastructure solution for real-time climate management.
  • Early Warning Systems: Utilized to mitigate disaster risks through advanced forecasting and sensor-based alerts.

Reflecting on India’s leadership in sustainability, Dr. Singh highlighted the nation’s pioneering work showcased at COP29 in Baku. He applauded efforts to integrate disaster-resilient infrastructure into adaptation strategies, setting a benchmark for global climate leadership.

Dr. Singh emphasized the role of technology in managing climate challenges, particularly through accurate weather forecasting and data-driven solutions for disaster preparedness. He urged private sector stakeholders to complement government initiatives with innovative ideas and investments.

In his concluding remarks, Dr. Singh outlined the government’s priorities for fostering adaptation, advancing scientific research, and building partnerships across sectors. “Sustainability is not a goal that can be achieved in isolation. It requires collective efforts from every sector, individual, and institution,” he stated.

The Green Sarathi Summit brought together policymakers, industry leaders, academicians, and environmental advocates for an in-depth discussion on sustainability as a cornerstone of India’s development strategy. Dr. Singh’s address reiterated the government’s commitment to building a sustainable future through innovation, public participation, and collaboration.
