Nubra Valley, Ladakh: The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has once again demonstrated its commitment to ensuring food safety across the country through its “Food Safety on Wheels” (FSW) initiative. In a landmark effort, FSSAI launched a food safety awareness campaign in Nubra Valley, located at an elevation of 17,582 feet via Khardung La, on September 27th and 28th. This marks the first comprehensive food safety drive at such an extreme altitude, showcasing FSSAI’s ability to conduct food testing and raise awareness even in remote and challenging regions.
The two-day campaign focused on ensuring adherence to food safety standards by conducting on-the-spot testing of various food products, including milk, spices, and juices. A total of 35 food samples were tested, including 12 milk samples, 8 samples of spices, and 9 juice samples. Additionally, six local water samples were collected for detailed microbial analysis, ensuring that food and water consumed in the region meets the highest safety standards.
A key component of the drive was educating local Food Business Operators (FBOs) about the importance of food safety practices. FSSAI officials highlighted the need for proper registration and licensing, while also providing guidelines on the potential consequences of safety violations. Informational display boards were distributed to FBOs to promote better hygiene and food safety practices.
The “Food Safety on Wheels” initiative is comprised of mobile food-testing vehicles that conduct simple tests for common adulterants in items like milk, water, and edible oils, while also raising public awareness about food safety. In addition to testing, FSW units provide training and certification programs for food handlers and supervisors, with a focus on small food businesses. These mobile units empower field functionaries in various states to extend their outreach and conduct surveillance, particularly in remote areas like Nubra Valley.
