Bhubaneswar: In a renewed bid to bring metro rail to the state capital, the Odisha government will soon submit a reworked proposal for the Bhubaneswar Metro Rail project to the Centre, Housing & Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra announced on Wednesday.
A new technical committee will be set up to study viable routes, assess the city’s transport needs, and prepare a detailed project report. The panel will also visit cities with operational metro networks to learn from their models and recommend alternatives that could help bypass the city’s traffic choke points.
The minister said a Comprehensive Mobility Plan has already been prepared, mapping out potential corridors, parking zones, and allied facilities. Public opinion will be sought to ensure the final blueprint aligns with commuters’ needs and urban realities.
The move follows the cancellation of the earlier metro plan, which was abandoned due to heavy traffic congestion along its proposed route. Officials hope the revised approach will pave the way for a practical and congestion-free metro system for Bhubaneswar.
