Empowering State Commissioners for Persons with Disabilities: Workshop Highlights at International Purple Fest 2024

Panaji: The recently concluded International Purple Fest 2024 in Panaji, Goa, featured a two-day workshop specifically designed for State Commissioners for Persons with Disabilities. The workshop aimed to enhance the effectiveness of these commissioners in realizing the rights of Persons with Disabilities (PwD) under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act (RPwD Act), 2016.

The workshop covered two major themes. First, it explored the proactive role State Commissioners can play in ensuring compliance with disability rights, exercising suo motu powers to address infringements, and facilitating timely access to justice. The second theme focused on sensitizing the commissioners about the lived realities of disabled individuals. Practical exercises included blindfolding participants during a movie clip to emphasize the importance of audio description and having them communicate in an unfamiliar language to highlight the significance of sign language interpretation.

Former Chief Justice of India, U.U Lalit, addressed the workshop, emphasizing the critical role of Disability Commissions as vigilant guardians of disability rights. Additionally, Justice A.K Sikri, Former Judge of the Supreme Court of India and Patron-in-Chief of Mission Accessibility, shared an insightful message. He stressed the need for practical events like the workshop to bridge the gap between legislative principles and their actual implementation.

The workshop included a discussion with 21 Purple Ambassadors, each representing a recognized disability under the RPwD Act. The diverse range of topics covered and interactive sessions aimed to equip State Commissioners with the knowledge and sensitivity necessary to champion the rights of Persons with Disabilities effectively. The overarching message emphasized the ongoing commitment of Disability Commissions as robust watchdogs for safeguarding disability rights.
