Empowering Girls: WSC Witnesses Remarkable Surge in Skill Development Enrollment in Odisha

Bhubaneswar: In a remarkable trend, young girls in Odisha are increasingly embracing skill development programs, showcasing a growing determination to achieve independence and career success. The surge in enrollment statistics at the World Skill Center (WSC) highlights a promising shift, as more girls actively participate in skill development initiatives, securing opportunities in both national and multinational corporations.

Over the past three years, the enrollment figures at WSC have seen a substantial rise. Starting with an initial batch of 26, the numbers climbed to 157 in the second, 262 in the third, and an impressive 342 in the fourth batch. This upward trajectory reflects the heightened interest and commitment of girls in upskilling themselves, leveraging the opportunities and exposure offered by WSC.

Laxmi Hansdah, hailing from Dharamdih in Mayurbhanj, shared her aspiration to pursue an advanced course at this premier skill training institute after completing her course at TTI Takatpur.

“The placement opportunities and the new course ‘Vertical Transportation’ motivated me to break the stereotype of women not choosing technical subjects. Coming from a small village, the opportunity to travel overseas is a chance to transform my life,” expressed Laxmi. The Advanced Certificate in Facility Technology ‘Vertical Transportation’ covers the installation, commissioning, and maintenance of lifts, escalators, and travelators.

Lija Pala, from Ganjam district, shared her journey, stating, “My mother works as a housekeeper, and my late father was a farmer. They entrusted me with confidence and provided unwavering support throughout my life. I have enjoyed learning the advanced skills at WSC. The confidence instilled in me through hands-on training and life skills modules has paved the way for my selection with a prominent corporation like Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL) by Tata Group.” Lija currently works as a Spa Therapist in Taj Cidade de Goa after completing a 1-year advance course in ‘Beauty Wellness & Spa’ at WSC.

Opportunities for girls in Odisha are expanding, and in response to industry demands, various advanced courses and training are being provided at WSC. With quality skill training, students are industry-ready and capable of working in both national and international job locations.

To encourage more girls to opt for technical education and training, the government of Odisha has launched the ‘Sudakshya’ scheme. Under this initiative, girls can enroll in World Skill Center without paying any fees. Additionally, every student receives a free uniform, hostel accommodation, food, and bus transport facilities.

Under the ‘Student Exchange Program’ (SEP), 40 students are sent to Singapore each year for a two-week overseas experience. Moreover, 24 students are selected annually for a six-month paid internship program (SIP) in Singapore. The students actively participate in campus placements offered by World Skill Center, securing jobs in various corners of the world, including India.
