Kochi: The first water metro connecting ten small islands surrounding the port city of Kochi will be launched on April 25.
The metro project will start with a fleet of eight electric hybrid boats manufactured by Cochin Shipyard Limited. The project has been initiated at a cost of ₹1,137 crore.
The start of the water metro will bring a major revolution in the water transport sector in the state and will also boost the tourism sector. It will also provide the cheapest travel through the idyllic backwaters of Kochi.
The officials have streamlined 15 routes that cover 75 km. More electrically-propelled hybrid boats from the Cochin Shipyard are likely to be added in the coming days.
Along with single-trip tickets, commuters can also avail of weekly, monthly, and quarterly passes in the water metro.
