Election Commission of India and BCCI Organize Exhibition Cricket Match to Promote Voter Education and Inclusivity

New Delhi: Aimed at promoting voter education and inclusivity, the Election Commission of India (ECI) joined hands with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to organize an Exhibition Cricket Match. The event, held at the Karnail Singh Stadium in New Delhi on March 16, witnessed the Indian Deaf Cricket Association (IDCA) Team compete against the Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA) team.

The highlight of the event was the announcement of Ms. Sheetal Devi, a distinguished Para-archer and Arjuna Awardee, as the National Icon in the Persons with Disabilities (PwD) category. This recognition underlines the commitment towards promoting inclusivity and recognizing excellence in various fields.

Chief Election Commissioner Shri Rajiv Kumar and Election Commissioners Shri Gyanesh Kumar and Shri Sukhbir Singh Sandhu graced the occasion, emphasizing the importance of inclusivity in the electoral process. Renowned former Indian Cricketer Nikhil Chopra was also present as a special guest, adding prestige to the event.

The match, which attracted a crowd of 2500 spectators including PwDs and young voters, showcased spirited performances from both teams. Despite a valiant effort from the IDCA team, the DDCA emerged victorious with a 69-run win (DDCA 190/5; IDCA 121/8). However, the real victory lay in the message of inclusivity and togetherness that resonated throughout the match.

The event marked the fulfillment of a commitment made by CEC Shri Rajiv Kumar to support the Indian Deaf Cricket team following their triumph in the T20 Champions Trophy held in UAE. This initiative is a testament to ECI’s dedication to promoting inclusivity and empowerment among all sections of society.

In addition to the cricket match, the event featured a captivating performance by the ‘Shining Star Music Band,’ composed of visually impaired musicians. It also saw the launch of a dedicated Voter’s Guide for PwDs and Senior Citizen Electors, aimed at facilitating a smooth and enjoyable voting experience.

The ECI has undertaken several initiatives to ensure the participation of PwDs in the electoral process, including optional home voting facilities, free transportation on poll day, and accessibility checklists at polling stations. These measures, combined with awareness campaigns and technological advancements, aim to enhance voter participation and strengthen democracy.

The event concluded with a stirring rendition of the national anthem in sign language by students from the Indian Sign Language Research and Training Centre (ISLRTC), symbolizing unity in diversity and the spirit of inclusivity.

As the nation gears up for the upcoming general elections, the Election Commission of India remains committed to fostering a truly representative and inclusive democracy, where every voice is heard and every vote counts.
