Bhubaneswar: In light of the looming threat posed by Cyclone DANA, East Coast Railway (ECoR) has initiated extensive safety protocols and operational preparations to ensure the protection of passengers and the smooth running of its services. Drawing on its experience with past cyclones, ECoR is making every effort to mitigate the potential impact of the storm on railway infrastructure and operations.
ECoR has established a 24/7 Disaster Management Cell at its headquarters in Rail Sadan and divisional offices in Khurda Road, Visakhapatnam, and Sambalpur to oversee emergency response and the restoration of train services in the aftermath of the cyclone. These teams are equipped to handle any disruptions and swiftly resume normal operations.
ECoR General Manager Shri Parmeshwar Funkwal chaired a critical preparatory meeting, urging all principal department heads and divisional managers to take immediate steps to ensure zero risk to passengers. Specialized teams have been deployed to focus on the rapid restoration of tracks, signaling systems, and electrification in the event of any damage. Diesel locomotives will also be on standby in case of power outages.
Key Safety Measures
To further prioritize passenger safety, ECoR has implemented a series of measures:
- Emergency Control Rooms equipped with satellite phones are fully operational, ensuring consistent communication throughout the crisis.
- With a red alert for coastal areas, a close watch is being kept on stations between Bhubaneswar and Visakhapatnam.
- Patrolling of vulnerable railway tracks by specially deputed patrolmen and stationary watchmen will be ongoing during heavy rain.
Service Adjustments
As a precaution, ECoR has announced the cancellation of certain train services. Passengers are encouraged to monitor official updates to stay informed of changes.
Additional Precautions Include:
- Vigilant monitoring of railway bridges, tracks, and signaling systems to prevent damage from heavy rains.
- Removal of silt, vegetation, and other obstructions from catchwater drains.
- Stockpiling of essential monsoon/cyclone reserve materials like boulders and sand for immediate use in case of flooding.
- Close coordination with the Meteorological Department and government agencies for real-time updates.
Gangmen and patrol teams will be actively monitoring tracks during periods of heavy rainfall, ensuring their safety for train passage. Diesel locomotives, tower wagons, and heavy machinery have been strategically placed for emergency mobilization to restore services swiftly.
ECoR’s Control Office, operating around the clock, is in close coordination with the Meteorological Department and the Disaster Management Cell, ensuring constant vigilance and up-to-date information as Cyclone Dana approaches.
