DRDO Achieves Milestone with Successful Flight Tests of VSHORADS Missile
Chandipur: The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has successfully conducted two flight tests of the Very Short-Range Air Defence System (VSHORADS) missile on February 28th and 29th, 2024. The tests, executed from a ground-based portable launcher off the coast of Odisha at the Integrated Test Range, Chandipur, were carried out against high-speed unmanned aerial targets, validating the system’s capabilities under different interception scenarios.
The indigenously developed VSHORADS is a Man Portable Air Defence System (MANPAD) designed by the Research Centre Imarat (RCI) in collaboration with various DRDO laboratories and Indian industry partners. The missile boasts innovative features, including a miniaturized Reaction Control System (RCS) and integrated avionics, which have demonstrated success during the recent flight tests. Propelled by a dual-thrust solid motor, the VSHORADS missile is specifically designed to neutralize low-altitude aerial threats at short ranges, with a focus on easy portability.
During the flight tests, the VSHORADS missiles showcased their effectiveness by intercepting and destroying high-speed unmanned aerial targets, meeting all mission objectives. The design of both the missile and launcher has been highly optimized to ensure convenient portability, a crucial factor in tactical operations.
The test flights were witnessed by officials from the Indian Army, senior scientists from various DRDO laboratories, and industry partners. The success of these trials marks a significant step forward in bolstering India’s defence capabilities.
Congratulating DRDO, the Indian Army, and industry partners, Defence Minister Shri Rajnath Singh expressed his satisfaction with the successful development trials. He emphasized that the VSHORADS missile, equipped with modern technologies, would provide a substantial technological boost to the armed forces.
Secretary DD R&D and Chairman DRDO also extended their congratulations to the entire team involved in the design and development of the VSHORADS missile, acknowledging their dedication and expertise in achieving this milestone. The successful flight tests underscore India’s commitment to advancing indigenous defence technologies, ensuring the nation’s security and readiness for future challenges.
