Doordarshan Partners with Hockey India League to Bring Historic Men’s and Women’s Matches to Indian Homes

New Delhi: In a landmark move to elevate hockey’s popularity and accessibility, India’s national broadcaster Doordarshan (DD) has announced a partnership with the Hockey India League (HIL). The collaboration aims to make “IndiaKaGame—Hockey” a nationwide celebration and ensure hockey players become household names.

This year’s Hockey India League, commencing on December 28, 2024, is historic as it features the inaugural season of the Women’s Hockey India League alongside the men’s competition. The league will showcase eight men’s teams and four women’s teams competing across Rourkela and Ranchi, presenting top-tier talent from India and abroad.

Known for its dedication to promoting Indian sports, Doordarshan will broadcast all matches live on DD Sports and its recently launched OTT platform, Waves. This ensures hockey fans, whether in urban hubs or remote villages, can experience the excitement of HIL firsthand.

Prasar Bharati Chairman Navneet Sehgal remarked, “Through our comprehensive coverage, we aim to amplify the league’s impact, celebrate the sport, and bridge the urban-rural divide. The debut of the Women’s HIL is particularly inspiring.”

CEO Gaurav Dwivedi added, “With the momentum of back-to-back Olympic medals, this partnership will elevate hockey’s production and broadcast to global sporting standards. Fans worldwide can tune in for the electrifying action starting December 28, 2024.”

HIL Governing Committee Chairperson Dr. Dilip Tirkey highlighted the importance of this year’s league, saying, “The Women’s HIL launch is a landmark step in promoting women’s hockey. With Doordarshan’s reach and commitment, we aim to inspire millions and set new standards for the league.”

Echoing this sentiment, Governing Committee Member Bhola Nath Singh said, “Hockey symbolizes our unity and pride. The addition of the Women’s HIL ensures equality and recognition for women athletes.”

In a groundbreaking development, Doordarshan’s partnership with Hockey India extends beyond HIL. All Hockey India National Championships across various categories, as well as all hockey events in India under Hockey India’s purview, will now be broadcast on DD.

This partnership is set to amplify the league’s reach and further solidify India’s connection to its national sport. As the golden era of Indian hockey continues, fans are gearing up for an unforgettable season of thrilling action, inspiring performances, and national pride.
