DHSE Launches Capacity Building Workshop for PGTs in English

Bhubaneswar: The Directorate of Higher Secondary Education (DHSE) today inaugurated a five-day Capacity Building Workshop for Post Graduate Teachers (PGTs) in English serving in non-government aided higher secondary schools across Odisha. The training programme, being held at the SIRD&PR, has been organised in collaboration with Azim Premji University.

A total of 50 English PGTs are participating in the workshop, which aims to strengthen teaching and assessment practices while aligning with the National Education Policy (NEP).

The inaugural session was attended by senior officials of the School and Mass Education Department, including Additional Secretary Subhashree Nanda, Director of Higher Secondary Education Niyati Patnaik, Joint Director Sasmita Mali, Deputy Directors C.H. Vijayalakshmi and Jitendra Nayak, along with Azim Premji University faculty members Partha Sarathi Mishra and Jenny Alex.

Addressing the gathering, Additional Secretary Nanda said the workshop would enable teachers to enhance their communication skills and become ambassadors of effective teaching in their institutions and communities. “Under the NEP framework, empowering teachers is the first step to ensuring Odisha’s education system emerges as a global model,” she remarked, urging participants to focus on the practical aspects of education.

In her welcome address, Director Niyati Patnaik announced that similar training sessions would be extended to all PGT teachers in a phased manner, while also expressing gratitude to Azim Premji University for its partnership. The programme was coordinated by Vijayalakshmi, with Jitendra Nayak delivering the vote of thanks, and Sasmita Mali supervising workshop arrangements.

Over the course of five days, participants will deliberate on a wide range of academic and pedagogical themes, including challenges in teaching English, language learning goals, curriculum objectives, skill-based communication activities, and critical analysis in pedagogy. Special focus will be placed on assessment practices aligned with the National Curriculum Framework 2023, covering areas such as question paper analysis and competency-based evaluation methods.
