Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has allocated ₹1 crore to ensure the grand success of Dhanu Jatra-2025, slated to be held in Bargarh district from 3rd to 13th January. This iconic festival, a vibrant showcase of Odisha’s cultural heritage, is being elevated with new initiatives aimed at securing international recognition, as highlighted by Culture Minister Suryabanshi Suraj.
Around 170 participating artists will receive an honorarium of ₹10,000 each in recognition of their contributions. The National School of Drama will produce a documentary to capture the festival’s cultural essence, further amplifying its significance on a national and international platform.
In a unique addition to this year’s festivities, renowned artists such as Arun Govil, Nitish Bharadwaj, and Hema Malini have been invited to participate. The event coincides with Prabasi Bharatiya Divas, providing an opportunity for the global diaspora to experience the grandeur of Dhanu Jatra through live broadcasts.
A new website dedicated to Dhanu Jatra will offer detailed information on the festival’s history, venues, and schedules. Real-time GPS-enabled navigation will guide visitors, ensuring a seamless experience.
During Dhanu Jatra, Bargarh transforms into the mythical city of Mathura, while nearby Ambapalli becomes Gopapur, vividly reenacting episodes from Indian mythology. The festival symbolizes Odisha’s cultural pride and offers a glimpse into its rich storytelling traditions.
An expert committee will be formed to spearhead efforts in securing UNESCO recognition, further solidifying Dhanu Jatra’s place as a global cultural treasure.
Minister Suraj emphasized the government’s commitment to making Dhanu Jatra 2025 a landmark event, stating, “This festival not only celebrates our heritage but also symbolizes the pride of Odisha. We are determined to make it a global phenomenon.”
