Defence Secretary Applauds Indigenous Innovation during Inspection of BEL and AVNL Units

Chennai: Defence Secretary Giridhar Aramane undertook a visit to Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), Chennai, on February 13, 2024. During the visit, he conducted a thorough review of the Unit’s performance, accompanied by Bhanu Prakash Srivastava, CMD of BEL. Aramane expressed appreciation for the Research and Development (R&D) and manufacturing facilities at the unit and called upon all stakeholders to enhance productivity and efficiency. He highlighted the crucial role played by BEL in indigenizing weapon systems and platforms, stressing its significance for the success of the Make in India initiative. Furthermore, the Defence Secretary emphasized the need for capacity development among Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).

Giridhar Aramane extended his visit to the Armoured Vehicles Nigam Limited (AVNL) Corporate office, Heavy Vehicles Factory (HVF), and Engine Factory Avadi (EFA) for a comprehensive review of production activities and ongoing R&D projects. In an address to AVNL officials, he underscored the importance of adopting global manufacturing practices and maintaining the highest levels of quality. He encouraged a focus on R&D, new product development, indigenization initiatives, and overall efficiency and competitiveness.

During his tour at the Heavy Vehicles Factory, Aramane visited the MBT Arjun Shop and various production shops, including General Assembly Shop, Hull Shop, and Transmission Shop. He actively participated in a tree plantation ceremony as part of environmental sustainability efforts.

The Defence Secretary’s itinerary also included a visit to the manufacturing facilities at Engine Factory Avadi (EFA), where he received a briefing on Tank Engine manufacturing and overhauling. EFA demonstrated the fully indigenized engines of Armoured Fighting Vehicles (AFVs) of T-72, T-90, BMP-II, and other variants, aligning with the spirit of AtmaNirbhar Bharat. Shri Aramane concluded his visit by participating in a tree plantation ceremony at EFA, reinforcing the commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable practices.
