Cyclone Yaas: Odisha Pegs Loss of Rs 610 Crore, Affected 60 Lakh People

Bhubaneswar: The severe cyclonic storm Yaas which made landfall at Bahanga area of Balasore districts on May 26 has caused a damage of Rs 610 crore to Odisha.

State’s Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) PK Jena informed during a review meeting chaired by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Wednesday evening.

Jena informed that 60 lakh people of 11,000 villages were affected due to ‘Yaas’. A total of 150 villages were inundated due to high tides. As per reports most of the government properties were damaged during the cyclone. 

The Energy Department cited that 30 lakh electricity consumers were affected after the cyclone, 99.8 percent of the power supply in the affected areas has been restored. The department is installing 230 transformers destroyed during the cyclone. The department suffered a loss of Rs 150 crore.

Similarly, the Panchayati Raj Department reported losses of Rs 277 crore, while the Water Resources Department reported losses of around Rs 108 crore.
