Cutting-Edge Innovations Unveiled at 4th Technology Innovation in Cyber-Physical Systems Workshop

Mumbai: The Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, played host to the 4th Technology Innovation in Cyber-Physical Systems (TIPS) workshop on May 13th, a bi-annual event showcasing the latest advancements in the field. This gathering, which draws stakeholders from government, startups, investors, academia, and industry, serves as a pivotal platform for collaboration and knowledge exchange.

In his keynote address at the inaugural ceremony, Prof. Abhay Karandikar, Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology, underscored the growing significance of cyber-physical systems in today’s digital landscape. “The cyber-physical systems represent an area that is becoming more and more important in the increasingly pervasive digital world and will drive all sectors of our economy in the near future,” remarked Prof. Karandikar, highlighting the pivotal role of the 25 Technology Innovation Hubs (TIHs) in fostering disruptive technologies.

These TIHs, nestled within premier academic institutes across the country, serve as hotbeds for research and development, entrepreneurship, and international collaboration in cyber-physical systems. The workshop featured a compendium showcasing groundbreaking technologies from various hubs, including smart IoT solutions for agriculture, innovative healthcare devices, advanced security systems, and autonomous vehicles.

Among the showcased innovations were smart IoT solutions for monitoring crop and soil health, and a smart patch for early diabetes management from the TIH of IIT Bombay; an IT-OT Security Operation Center and Blockchain Technology-based System for secure city management from C3i Hub of IIT Kanpur; 5G Lab innovations and mobile surgical units for remote cataract surgeries from Pravartak Technologies Foundation of IIT Madras; Map-based Navigation for Autonomous Vehicles from TiHAN Foundation of IIT Hyderabad; and Biodiversity Sensors and AI-powered livestock management CPS from Of Awadh Foundation of IIT Ropar.

The workshop facilitated invaluable knowledge sharing among the hubs, allowing them to learn from each other’s successes and failures. Additionally, an investors pitch provided a platform for startups to showcase their products and technologies to potential investors, while a tech expo displayed cutting-edge innovations developed by the hubs.

Speaking on the occasion, Secretary, DST, emphasized the unique model of collaboration between industry, academia, and investors, stressing its potential to catalyze an ecosystem of deep-tech startups. Dr. Kris Gopalakrishnan, Chairman of the Mission Governing Board, NM-ICPS, highlighted the need for a cultural shift towards creating products and technologies within institutions, thereby fostering a conducive environment for R&D.

The event was graced by esteemed personalities including Prof. Ramgopal Rao, Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Committee, NM-ICPS, Prof. Shireesh Kedare, Director of IIT Bombay, and senior officials from the Department of Science and Technology. Faculty, students, and venture capitalists also contributed to the vibrant discussions, marking the success of the two-day workshop in advancing the frontiers of cyber-physical systems innovation.
